Theme: Starting with Interest
In this lesson, students will learn to craft open-ended questions to encourage in-depth responses, understand the components of a narrative arc, and practice guiding conversations to uncover compelling stories.
Beginning with a warm-up exercise analyzing a video of a boy’s biking journey, the class will explore the elements that make a story engaging, such as clear progression, building tension, and a satisfying resolution.
Students will then discuss the importance of understanding the intention behind conversations, particularly in interviews, and reflect on what makes a conversation meaningful.
In a small group project, students will practice interviewing each other on personal interests, using example questions to foster genuine curiosity.
A class discussion will follow on using interviews across mediums like podcasting, writing, and documentaries, emphasizing active listening, open-ended questions, and authenticity.
Finally, the fundamentals of storytelling will be outlined, covering essential aspects like relatable characters, setting, conflict, theme, and resolution.
If we don't get to everything, we’ll continue next week.
